Posted on Wednesday, Dec 10, 2008 - 11:09 pm: Hi Dr.O and friends,I have recently noticed my 13 yr. old gelding posturing to pee more frequently. I board him, but often see him 2 x /day. I usually ride him mid morning...I bring him in from outside, put him in stall to pee etc and occassionally he will stance to pee again 10 - 15 minutes later. normally nothing comes out...or maybe a little. his first urination looks normal. No straining, ..urine looks clear yellow to cloudy yellow..no brown or red. He does not seem to strain or grunt or look uncomfortable or colicky. He has been working well under saddle with only very minor issues, if at all. Vet did urinalysis which only showed raised calcium (5 ish I think) Horse eats lots of hay...grass/timothy mix with some clover (trying to limit clover/legume) 1 1/2 cups of senior feed (which has first 2 ingredients listing alphalfa meal & beet pulp) and 1 cup purina athlete 2 x /day. Sheath looks good and no bean or redness/sensitivity around penis. Abdominal wall is more sensitive than usual. Vet came and watched urination and followed with rectal exam and ultrasound of bladder...bladder felt empty & normal and ultrasound did not show any stones at all. Fecal test was done for possible ulcer's...negative, although from what I understand there could be tiny ones that would not be preforated (bleeding) and not test positive on a fecal test. horse does not seem "girthy" or sore elsewhere...but is very polite and stoic and wants to do a good job. He is turned out regularly 6+ hours/day and almost always has hay in front of him and is in a medium work program with a lot of praise...not too demanding. I have read Dr.O's articles on kidney disease & urination...nothing seems to fit. I'm thinking about having another urine test and have it cultured to possibly show some hidden bacteria... My horse does not seem miserable....but the stancing is not normal...and i think he could feel better.. ANY THOUGHTS FOLKS??? Many Thanks! IKE |

He is at a boarding facility...with great care and they do notice a lot of things...but they would normally just be walking by his stall and there is nothing that looks awkward about his stance that would alarm them.I have noticed it in the early evening a few times if I stop by to see him and am there for a while. One other possible rule out is a very mild intermittent colic. Often horses park out as though they need to urinate with a mild colic.DrO |

Posted on Sunday, Dec 14, 2008 - 8:39 pm: Hi Dr.O, I have been watching closely for colic, as we thought of that also...but he really looks completely comfortable and normal. After a normal deliberate, urine stance...he will walk forward and just begin munching hay. if on the cross ties...he will stand quiet and relaxed with a hind foot resting. Even after a second stance with no urine...I DON'T see him pacing, looking around, parking out, rolling, biting sides, looking depressed or anxious...he'll just be munching hay as normal.I think the second unrinaylsis with a culture is exactly what I should do at this point. I'm also considering trying Ulcerguard for a week or two to see if he suddenly is a different horse. Thanks Vicki, for your thoughts. His back has been checked (and saddle is adjusted about 2 x per year). Ike |

Posted on Friday, Jun 12, 2009 - 9:06 am: Hi Dr. O, FYI...Symptoms of this gelding have been the same. he is still seemingly in great health...but will urinate as normal, and sometimes...a few minutes later posture again...recently adding a bit of a grunt and a slight pelvic tilt/forcing along with it. I did another urinalysis which showed normal ( and better than a few months ago re> calcium/crystals).I am attaching his blood work for your review if you don't mind....I'm wondering if anything might be going on in his kidneys..? Many Thanks

This comes from a distended bladder (normal and abnormal) or inflammation of the lower urinary tract: bladder downward. I concur with the labs interpretation that this appears to be a normal lab.DrO |
