Dr. O
I had discussed ERU with you last summer. The vet had put my horse on low a dosage of bute to help him. He was still having many break outs. I was really concerned that he would go blind.
I found and natural herb Silver Lining. And started him on it. He has been on it for about 4 mo. At first he was still getting outbreaks but they slowed down considerably. I have not given him any bute since Sept. he seems to be doing very well, no outbreak for 2 mo now.
Wondered if you have heard of this natural herb company.
I also started our Navicular horse on one of their herbs. And he is doing great.

Hello Hilma,
The natural course of the disease is very irregular and most horses having many recurrences tend to get better with time. Just as the horse with ERU that is doing well will tend to do worse in the future. It is very unlikely some herbal medication is going to suppress the immune function that causes the ERU. Ditto for a change in pathology in a horse with chronic heel pain. That said, I cannot say it is impossible what is in the Silver Lining?

Hi Dr. O
The product I am using Silver Lining Herbs. The Co. that produces the herbs worked with the Indians out west to use their old natural remedies for these products. I felt if they were natural it would not hurt to try them. I didn't like leaving him on Bute everyday.
The ingredients are, bilberry,eyebrite,oregon grape,red raspberry,witch hazel,chapparal,uva ursi,slippery elm and yellow dock.
I also leave a fly mask on him when the sun is out.
If anyone knows how to keep a horse from ripping off flymasks. Please let me know I go through many of them. I even sewed the mask to the sides of his break away halter, it lasted two days.

Hilma, some of the most potent toxins in the world are natural so just because it is labelled as such is not a guarantee of harmless. I am not aware of any of these ingredients having a effect on ERU. For the fly mask problem try running a search as it is a often discussed problem however if your horse is determined to get it off he will.
