We lost our old boarder friend, Bimbo today. He was in his early 30's. I went out to check on everyone around 11:00 a.m. and Bimbo was thrashing around in the mud behind his stall. I managed to get him up and got him out to the arena where there's dry ground not covered in snow and ice. It was obvious he was in a lot of pain. Luckily, our vet came right out. He examined him and said his rear bowel was empty and his stomach was visably bloated. Poor guy was dripping in sweat and kept trying to roll, even after two shots of Banamine and Romp. I was able to get Bimbo's owners on the phone. By the time they got out here, Bimbo had started to leak blood from his rectum. He had another pain shot before he became pain free. There really wasn't much to be done for him. He probably had a rupture according to the vet; possible he had a tumor block his intestine, or a twisted gut. His owners agreeded to have him "put down."

Bimbo arrived here from MO at age 27. He was a big, gangly retired Arabian endurance horse with a great sense of humor and good personality. We really enjoyed having him around. He'll be missed. He was a good soul. Lonnie will bury him out in the far pasture next to Maarissa.

Sara, sorry about Bimbo, sounds like nothing could be done and he led a good life.

So sorry Sara, please accept and pass on my condolences.

I lost a 33 year old mare in August to a torn aorta at the pelvic split. Like you, there was nothing we could do but end the pain.

Sara,

Oh, I just read your reply to my joke I fw'd, and didn't know why you needed a laugh...now I see how it is.

I am sorry, hugs to you, and to Bimbo's owners.

I felt bad for Connie and Tom, they've had a rough year; both of them have had to have surgery recently and they haven't been able to spend much time with Bimbo the last few months. The two young ladies that help me out had fallen in love with him, so he got a lot of attention. Connie asked if she could still come by and visit the other horses and feed them carrots; of course, I told her she could, and Tom can bring the dogs over and run them in the hay fields - their favorite activity, I think.

I'm just glad Tom and Connie were able to get over here before I had to tell the vet to go ahead and put Bimbo out of his misery. You could tell it was his time to go; it was like his spirit had already left. I'm glad I didn't decide to go skiing with Lonnie and that Bimbo didn't suffer any longer than he did.

I'll pass on your kind words.

Aww. flashbacks to when we lost Timmy last year. Sounds nearly the same scenario. So sorry, but how wonderful that some horses get to live long happy lives with only one bad day. We should all be so lucky to be cared for with such kindness and wisdom. Sorry for you Sara, as well as the owner.

So sorry to hear of Bimbo's passing. What a good thing you were there, and that he'd reached a ripe old age, but it's still a really sad event.

Sara - So sorry to hear about Bimbo. It is great that he got a lot of attention from your barn help and that you were there so his suffering would be short.
My condolences to you and the owners,

Ahh Sara, it is so hard to lose an old friend, they get into ones heart and take a firm hold.
I know you will miss seeing him.

He was fortunate to have had a wonderful retirement home.

I wish all horses could lie down and just go to sleep but that is so rare.At least Bimbo was given pain meds and not alone. To his owners my sorrow at their loss but at least he was with you which would seem to be one of the best places a horse could be!
