Posted on Tuesday, Jan 6, 2009 - 8:16 pm: Hello All, I read the other post related to this, but there was no answer so I am posing my situation to you.My 2 year old QH gelding was a bit off 2 nights ago (hind end - couldn't really tell which side). It was so slight that I wasn't even sure I was seeing something. More pronounced turning clockwise, but still very slight. I just left him to pasture for the night. I had to work last night so I didn't see him, but tonight I brought him in and he was clearly lame on the right hind. He is putting weight on it, but not his whole weight. With each step, I can see and hear the fetlock joint popping. He does not take a full step and roll over like he normally would. He is in his stall for the night and I will have the vet out tomorrow. I am super worried about my baby! Has anybody else every had this occur? |

I had posted something about this awhile ago about Hank, his still pops in and out of joint, when it's out he is NQR behind, but then it pops back in. It is a strange thing, that he still has to this day. Just his RR.Seems when the farrier does his back hooves it pops out quite often, you can feel the joint move when it does this. He doesn't get really "lame" just off a bit until it pops back in, like you said I can hear it (it is loud) and see it. Keep us informed! I would love to know what you find out. I hope it's nothing serious for your horse. |

I would change my opinion if there is remarkable heat and swelling around the joint. I think you are doing the right thing resting the horse and having the vet out to check it quickly. DrO |

I guess the funky looking joint movement was just a result of him walking funny to keep the weight off, just like Dr O said about the popping noise. He did have swelling up to about mid-cannon and had some heat just above the coronary band, but he is now much better. He is on Tucoprim and the swelling is down a bunch, no heat, and very sound. We are also continuing twice daily soaking with Epsom salt and Betadine. He is not wrapped because he tears them off so I am just keeping him as clean as I can. He has been in his stall but tomorrow I plan on turning him out in a small paddock hoping the exercise will help bring the swelling down even more. I'm now a happy horse-mom! Thanks for the advice/good thoughts! |
