My 4 1/2 year old gelding is on stall rest from OCD surgery on his hocks and I noticed that his eyes seemed slightly cloudy/hazy looking. He is staying with my trainer at her barn and I only see him 1-2 times a week during his recovery. She seems to think that they just look cloudy because he is in the darkish stall and I am used to seeing his eyes outside (he generally is out at pasture) He is not exhibiting any signs of other "eye" issues, tearing, redness, etc. I mentioned it to my Equine Surgeon and he said he will take a look at him when he checks his hocks next week, but I was wondering, if it is possible for lighting conditions to make his eyes look slightly cloudy or is it more likely he is developing another issue?

Your trainer is right, in certain light situations a horse's eye can take on a pale cast. You should try looking at your horse in different light situations and confirm if this is the case and if still convinced the eyes are cloudy would recommend a call in to your vet. DrO

Kim, I have experienced this concern and it absolutely was the lighting at a time that my horse was being kept indoors. Upon moving the horse outdoors I was able to see that the eyes looked normal. Shining a small flash light into each of the horse's eyes may yield information too, but only if it does not spook him.

I am glad to hear this...I will look at him "in a new light". I was hoping the poor boy was not going to come into another painful problem after just having surgery. He's being such a trooper and he only has a few more days until he can go out in a small pasture...yeah! I'm sure he can't wait.
