On 1-23-09 I noticed a 50 cent piece size of hair missing by my mares right side eye. Appeared that it was possibly taken off by hitting, rubbing ect. Left it alone, the next night I didn't get a chance to look at it, the following day I Get home and it is now the size of your hand and a half. I put bag a balm on it being it was night time and -10 degrees. The next morning it has spread a little more but not allot, so I put another cream (will have to look at the info, it comes in a three pack series, two spray bottles and this cream which of course has all been frozen.) Tonight it has not spread, but allot of "horse" persons believe its a fungus and try a iodine type of product...The spot on her leg has not gotten any bigger either, just her head? No fever, all vitals are normal. Up to date on Vaccines and a rotation wormer program. What type of fungus is so advanced and what is a cure?

Welcome to posting Carrie,
I don't see any indication in your post of what might be causing the hair loss or even if it is a disease or instead some early patchy shedding for the spring. We discuss the differential diagnosis of hair loss at Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Overview of Hair Loss & Irritated Skin and some of the ways to tell them apart. Links are then provided to the articles on the specific disease and treatment.

Here are some photos I took, the right leg appears to be growing back some hair. The jaw side has not gotten larger but there are now two spots on her forelock area?

right front leg

Carrie, look at the article Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin » Rain Rot and Rain Scald: Dermatophilus. Is the hair coming off as described in this article or is it falling out one hair at a time?

I have not noticed any Clumps but I have been gentle with her face not trying to make sure it doesnt hurt. It Got large so fast and after the scrub I gave her stopped the spread so I am assuming it is Dermatophilus. Never had it before, nothing has changed in her living enviroment, but we did have a horse in her for a week, but I didnt notice any patches off that mare either? Is she contagious should I place her in her own paddock?

Without the characteristic dermatophilus lesions the diagnosis remains very uncertain. If not dermatophilus the amount of damage to the face suggest these lesions are itchy and the horse was rubbing the face raw then it stopped being itchy allowing the crusts to form. Is this the case?
