Hi, I'm new here to the site.

Does anybody know much about this, how it's treated and if treatment is successful? I think the horse has a chronic condition and I just wanted to get some more info.

A bit of background. I rode about 20 years ago, and just recently started volunteering with rescued horses. This one is a BelgianX. He is being treated but I'd like some more info if anyone has any.

Thanks!

Welcome Yoter,
I think you may be referring to a condition of Drafts called Chronic Progressive Lymphedema. To see if this is right check out Diseases of Horses » Cardiovascular, Blood, and Immune System » Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema (Lymphedema).

Thanks. I did look at that and I'm not sure it's right? I did quite a bit of research because it is pretty ugly, and it stinks (literally). Here's a pic I found that more closely resembles what I see on the horse: https://imagebank.ipcmedia.com/imageBank/g/Guinness%20arrival.JPG

It does have big nodules, and like I said, they are treating him. His background is that he was an Amish draft horse and was sent to slaughter because of this. The rescue saved him but the disease had progressed pretty badly. He is ridable and has a sweet disposition. I can probably get pics of his actual condition when I see him on Saturday.

Yoter it does look and sound (big nodules and the odor from the secondary skin infection) like CPL but you should have this confirmed by a veterinarian.
