After reading the article on Rain Rot and Rain Scald:Dermatophilus, I think this maybe what my mare has on her ears. Can anyone tell me by looking as this picture? https://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa97/mollytomale-photos/Jetta%20in%20Feb%2020 09/0127090955a.jpg

I can't tell by the photo, maybe Dr. O or someone else can. I personally have never heard of rain rot on ears though. Do they itch or seem to bother her? (Like your gloves; I have a pair just like them!)

My horse once had something that looked like that on his ears and my vet recommended Extra Strength Vagasil and it WORKED GREAT! It was a bit embarrasing buying the extra strength, extra large tube when I knew most of the people in the line! Hope you have as easy a time getting rid of it as I did.

Thanks for responding Sara. I don't think they itch. It only bothers her when I pick at it. The scabs are kinda sticky or gummy feeling. She also has it on her face. Thank you also Ruthi, How often did you apply the Vagasil, and how long did it take to get rid of it?

Hi, I applied the Vagasil for about a week and a half and the hair started growing back. Another friend had the same results with her horse. Hope it works! Ruthi

Welcome dunsrule, The photo is not in focus enough to really see the skin lesions clearly and even so does not give us the important information: do the scabs come off like shown in the article. Very few other problems have this characteristic lesion. It sounds like Ruthi P's horse may have had ringworm. DrO

Hi, my mare and gelding just went thru rain-rot, and the mare did have on large bare spot on her ear, where to this day no hair has re-grown although the skin was always clear, no open lesions, nor puss, just bare skin.

How about mites? I have seen it look like this before. Try De-lice pour on in a spray bottle or cloth, I have had it work on scabby heals also .
