This is my new Thoroughbred. His name is Baby! Gelding, 8 yrs old in April. Not raced, thank goodness! I have had him going on 3 weeks. He was thin, but is gaining weight slowly. What I have questions on is his skin/hair. I have an appointment Monday with my vet for vacs, teeth floating (if needed) and just an over all check up. When we brought him home he had some balding on his face, it is growing back and has some nice fuzz on it now. But he is losing hair on his shoulder really bad and a little all over his body. I am thinking Dermatophilus, by what I have read here! What do you all think? https://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm318/MRSELUSIVE70/Baby/1-22-09007-1.jpgThis is before https://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm318/MRSELUSIVE70/Baby/2-2-09035.jpga few days ago https://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm318/MRSELUSIVE70/Baby/2-2-09029.jpghis shoulder and this was taken a few days ago so there is more lost now https://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm318/MRSELUSIVE70/Baby/2-2-09031.jpgclose up of shoulder. He is not itchy, the skin looks healthy to me. He is dirty so.... https://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm318/MRSELUSIVE70/Baby/1-26-09014.jpgAnd his sweet face! Thanks for looking.

I had a horse that looked like that and it was ringworm.

PaintMom, Do the hairs come out one at a time or in clumps with small scabs attached? DrO

I thought with ringworm you had sores and was itchy. DrO the come out in clumps with small scabs attached, he is not sore at all and where the hair comes off is healthy looking skin. At least to me it looks like healthy skin! I have noticed there can be a stray hair or two in the bald spot though. Thanks for the replies!

No PaintMon, ringworm can be quite variable in its appearance. But ringworm does not create scabby clumps as described and pictured in the article on dermatophilus. DrO

I recently rescued a TB who was underweight. We got the weight put back on him and started giving him senior feed. I just notice that his skin is doing the same as your horse. I was wondering if you found out what it was and what you did to clear it up.

Welcome Tina, We caution against the use of images to diagnose some infectious skin diseases as they can look quite similar. If your problem looks familiar start with the article on Dermatophilus as it gives diagnostic clues to ruling out this condition and how to treat it. You will find the link to the article at the top of this page. DrO
