Dr.O. as I was cleaning the lean-to today the boys were enjoying the sunshine and "hanging out" I noticed Hank looked dirty, so went to look at Sam.
When looking at Sam I noticed his urethra was extending out about an inch beyond the head of his penis. It didn't look normal at all...I will try to get a pic later, but this guy don't even like you looking at him there. He has never had this before. I have noticed he is urinating often, but not a lot comes out.
My vet was in his office this morning so I stopped and asked him about it, he said he didn't know until he looks at it Mon. (made appt.) Have you ever seen this? What CAN be the causes?
The other problem is when I have his sheath cleaned, no amount of tranq seems to make him hold still. He hates being messed with down there any suggestions on this?

The image above is a inflamed urethra DianeE.
If truly no amount of training or tranquilizing will make him hold still you will need to knock him out DianeE. Personally I think some combination of detomidine with a touch of butorphanol added will work on just about any horse but you might need the vet to titrate the proper dose by trial and error. More practical in the long run would be to train the horse to hold still.

I didn't know you could train a horse to hold still when they are loaded with tranq? The last time the vet cleaned his sheath he was given 10cc of ace and some rompum (I think) He is 14.1 hh and weighs around 750lbs. He was still wiggling when the vet was trying to clean him and threatening to kick, he had it sucked up so far he wouldn't DrOp at all so it was hard to get a good cleaning. It is the only procedure I have a problem with him. He does mind the chain well...how I taught him to hold still for vaccs.
Just didn't know if that would make a difference when they are tranqed?

I look at it as training "or" sedation. Not "and". Next time use a touch of detomidine instead of the xylazine but ace is still a good choice as it may give more relaxation of the penile muscles than the butorphanol above. The detomidine is much more effective at keeping horses still.
