Hi Dr. O - my horse gashed or scraped himself on the lower inside of one of his nostrils. There is an open roundish area about a half to 5/8 of an inch. Initially there was not much sign of bleeding, it looks like a scrape to the skin. I read your advice in the Wound Care article about not using hyDrOgen peroxide, but one of my trainer friends suggested flushing this wound with peroxide. Food is getting stuck in there daily. I have been flushing it with water and a light peroxide solution and used some antibiotic ointment for a couple of days. There was some swelling the first day which has gone all the way down. Today there was a slightly foul odor but from what I read of your article this could be from contaminated food particles stuck in it. I don't see any drainage or seeping. Is there anything else you would recommend using on this to clean or disinfect?

While I cannot make specific recommendations for your wound Susanne, I often flush minor wounds of the mucosa with a 2% povidone in sterile saline solution. This should be available from your veterinarian. Applied with a syringe with as much force as I could develop. When wounds develop odor if often means they need to cleaned more often.
