My year old colt had colic surgery. He had NSE and they also dumped his colon during surgery. He had some complications during his recovery at the hospital, but at day 10 he was sent home feeling better. He was sent home with banamine, eqlipse, glutamine, antibiotics and electrolytes. He was on all of that for 4 days and for the last 3 days he has not had any more banamine or antibiotics.
My question is: His manure is still soft on occasion. It hasn't quite got hard like it used to, but sometimes it is very soft.
Is this a normal occurence after a surgery, even thought is has been over 3 weeks? His temp is normal, he is eating and drinking fine.
He gets a small amount of grain morning and night when the other horses get fed theirs. It is all stuff the vet ok'd. (pro-add lo carb, handful of ultium and chia seed)
Could the grain be causing his manure to soften? Should I lower the amount to see if that causes the diarhhea?

Hello Samantha,
Still soft on a occasion with no other symptoms would not trouble me and a frequent enough occurance following surgery. I would not go adjusting the diet on this alone but with respect to your specific horse this needs to be run by your veterinarian.
