My 14 yo loaned TB mare has presently undiagnosed rear limb lameness. She has 2 half siblings the same age diagnosed with DSLD and Vet has completed a suspensory exam form but did not have time to discuss details. Please could you offer a basic explanation of the ultrasound findings in particular regarding possible DSLD? Results are attached as I previously typed them into message then lost the lot! (The exam was carried out immediately after shoeing and she frequently is off on the left front for a day or so afterwards. Nerve blocks and xrays to be done later)

Hello Marise, The examination finds the left fore and right rear suspensory ligament enlarged with areas that have decreased echogenicity. Milder changes are seen in the right fore. Decreased echogenicity is consistent with several types of lesions in the suspensory ligament including those of DSLD (article description and pictures of these lesions). However other than the size the evaluations are somewhat subjective and must be interpreted by the observer. As to whether this is consistent with age and work related DSLD requires putting this evaluation together with the horses history and other exam findings. History and findings consistent with DSLD are given in the article. DrO

Thank you for your time and explanation. I have a better understanding of the results and accept it being subjective. Marise
