Posted on Friday, Mar 6, 2009 - 5:28 pm: Noticed on my mare today a ping-pong ball sized lump on her right lower flank on her belly in front of her right rear leg. It is oozing blood but the blood is very thick. There appears to be only one small hole in the lump. It is a hard swelling. I'm not sure if it is a puncture or something else, I have attached a small picture. Any ideas? I have cleaned it and put salve on it but it still is oozing. She doesn't have any other lumps. |

When you lightly push from the sides, does the lump kind of "roll" or does it stay put? Is this lump affecting her walking? If you very lightly squeeze from two sides, does it seem like it wants to erupt? Or does it just ooze more blood? What I guess I am trying to get at is to see if it has the characteristics of trauma, cyst, bee or wasp sting, tumor, etc. The hole, if it is in the center, could point to a bee sting, but it may be too early in the year for that. A hole doesn't necessarily mean something went in, sometimes a boil or cyst will develop one' it is the body's immune system trying to drain it. The location kind of throws me off- what kind of bedding does she have? There are literally a million possibilities without an examination, but I would keep an eye on behavior, fever, and amount of blood coming out. Did this come on rapidly? Tumors can bleed quiet profusely, but develop over time, where cyst can come up quickly and can bleed, but more likely ooze other pleasant things than blood.Am sure I covered a 100 different possibilities and brought you no closer to an answer, but if you answer some of the questions, it may give Dr. O or others more to work with in offering advice. The lump rolls and seems to be just in the skin. It was mainly just oozing the thick blood. She has been out on our pasture, she has a stall with wood shavings but is not the kind of horse that likes to be in her stall and only really comes in to eat. This appeared very rapidly, it was not there 2 days ago. She is acting normal, no fever and eating normally. I haven't seen anything like it before, the only thing close to it I have seen was a horse that got a thistle in the end of his nose and it became swollen and the vet had to open it up to clean it out but this would seem like a strange location to get a foreign object but of course with horses anything is possible. Thanks, Kim |

A thorugh examination with an attempt to determine is there a splinter or something in it is indicated.DrO |
