Dr. O, I have a quick question. I was called to a farm to a horse that was about 29 hours past a grain bin robbery. He had eaten approx 15 pounds 16% sweet feed, a two gallon bucket of soy bean meal, and an entire bag (yes the whole thing) of alfa alfa cubes. Or this is what the owner claims. I was a little skeptical because he was showing no signs of distress, other than not eating any grain this morning or evening. No stiffening of the joints, and pretty normal gut sounds. Also no foot tenderness at all. Ran through a lunge quiet Tennessee Walker like. Bowels are moving as well, with 6 piles since last night. The article here affirms my thoughts that he should have been way sicker by now. But saying all of this, I gave him a gallon of mineral oil any way, but this was met with a lot of skepticism by the owner. Was I right in doing this? In your humble opinion, any how, because when I called our closest vet (3 counties away), he was out sick until Monday. I actually plan on hitting him again with the mineral oil tomorrow if he is off of his grain still, and told the owners they should only give him hay today any way. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Jesse, I cannot tell you how to treat this horse and what might be indicated. I do treat grain overloads just as I describe in the article Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Founder & Laminitis » Grain Overload in Horses. DrO
