Posted on Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 - 2:02 pm: I found this to be an interesting product. Of course everything I find interesting I wonder if it could help horses. My horses seem to be affected by pollens and dust in the warmer months, by sneezing, rubbing their noses, ect. When riding...especially Hank he sneezes and wants to rub his nose on everything.(not caused by flies) I bought a quiet ride face mask for him and while it isn't meant to filter out allergens the nose part of it is always full of dust, pollen where his nostrils are by the netting when we are done. SOO I wondered if this would help relieve that? I get a bit of hay fever myself in the warmer mos. so may get myself some and try it on him. Has anyone tried this on themselves? I wonder if it would work on mold spores also for horses afflicted with copd. https://newsinfusion.com/video_details.php?videoId=212 |

Posted on Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 - 2:59 pm: Sara, I have not tried it but think I will, and while I'm at it may try it on Hank before a ride. He sneezes and sneezes, and wants to rub his nose on everything possible....even the ground.I get the runny nose, sinus headaches in the summer.(hay fever) My sneezing has already started! The reviews I have read on it were almost all positive...a few said they had to use it twice before it worked. It's a small tube, but says it will give 150 doses. |

Posted on Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 - 4:14 pm: Hi Diane.I have known people to use plain ole Vaseline around their horse's nostrils for that very purpose. They must have found that it helped to some degree as they kept on doing it thru the allergy season(s). Personally, mine get the watery allergy/fly irritated eyes and a simple fly mask works for them......and in a warm winter year, it's an all year affair, taking them off only at night. My oldest (now deceased) mare needed hers day and night so I always had to keep her area lit at night so she could see thru it (like looking thru a screen at night). Good luck, it should help to some degree I would think. |

Posted on Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 - 5:00 pm: looks like an good product to try. I know I've been congested lately, and then fatigued from not breathing enough most likely during sleep. Our son gets the running eyes and nose pretty bad too, and I get sick of buying Clariton D every week being here in MI we can only buy one package at a time. |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 21, 2009 - 9:59 pm: Diane,I got some of the Allergen Block at Wally World today. I wanted my Clariton D, but was in a hurry and there was a line at the Pharmacy check out, so I saw this stuff, and thought "hey, I'll try that!" I can't say yet if it works or not, but I tell ya, I don't think it will be very economical for equine use. For $14.00, you get a TEENY TINY little tube of this stuff. (0.1 oz) Says 150 uses, and to apply every 4-6 hours. I think you'd need a tube per horse per day! I'll update in a few days, see if I think it helped me or not. I am suspicious I may be suffering from allergies since grooming the horses! All that dust, dander, manure...and funny, with snow on the ground today, the pollen count is high! Any one else get an itchy throat, dry cough, and runny but stuffy nose this time of year, made worse doing spring grooming? I am going to wear a dust mask (horses will find that amusing I bet!)next time I groom and see if that helps. And try the vaseline on the horses noses. |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 21, 2009 - 10:37 pm: Angie YEs let us know how it works. My nose has been stuffy, runny, and the sneezing is in full gear too.I was just going to try it on Hank when riding to see if he would quit rubbing his nose on everything! But if it works on me EVEN better. Look forward to the report |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 - 7:07 am: Diane,Used it twice yesterday, and I can breathe this morning! Nose is clear, no raspy throat. The real test will be how well it works after spending time outside. 50's to 70, lots of wind the next 3 days, so I will put it to the test. Thanks so much for posting the link about the Allergen Block; I'd rather use this than take meds. I do take extra Quercetin this time of the year, that is a good antihistamine. Don't think horses would benefit from that though? |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 - 10:59 am: I love to go as natural as possible. I have used these two things on dogs with allergies. 1 is milk thistle and also purchase "LOCAL" honey. I mix them both in their food. Turned around one dog completely...she was in terrible condition from grass.I wouldn't hesitate to use on my horses. I would try 2-3 TBS in grain...heck 1/2 my horses would lick it off a spoon. ha-ha The Milk thistle is 200 mg for every 10 lb's. I prefer to start low, so you can find a good balance.I would probably go 1000 mg twice a day. It is better to break it up, than to give it all at one time. Make sure you get the dry form. The liquid has alcohol in it. All you need is a drunk horse with a running nose |

Posted on Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 - 11:27 am: Hi all,I like to go natural if possible and the other week we had terrible wind and I had an allergy attack - which I hadn't had in years. Anyway, I went to the local nutrition shop and asked for something and they handed me actual bee pollen - bright yellow crumbs. You put it under your tongue - skeptical, but it was cheap >2.00 for the pack - I tried it. instant relief - folks at work tried it with their allergies - who suffer far worse than I - they were calling it a miracle. I would imagine it can be given to horses, dogs, kids etc. You can buy it on the internet by the pound. According to the internet - pound for pound it is high in B vitamins and contains 147 minerals/amino acids and is high in protein as well. I couldn't find anything negative about using it, but perhaps others might. I am interested if anyone has tried this and whether they had any success or failure- or know any problems with it's use. I am in Northern CA, notorious for allergies. Kathy |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 10:48 am: Diane,Not sure...I forgot to use it before bed the last couple of nights, and still woke up breathing easy. I did do some grooming and riding yesterday, and thought is helped. Or maybe the horses were less dusty. Our weather is back to rainy and cold, and I think the hot & dusty weather would be a better test of it. After reading some blogs about this stuff, not sure if it is just glorified vaseline, or what. It is comfortable to use, not yucky feeling like if you just used vaseline around your nose. Why don't you try it also and see what you think? It may be helpful, especially in conjunction with other things. I find a multitiered approach works best. Personally, I am going to take the Clarition-D, 12 hour strength during the day, and also use this, especially before bed; I was taking the Clariton-D 24 hour but it seemed to mess with my sleep. Oh, do a search for Blue Bonnet Super Quercetin, I think that was the product me and the kids took years ago for allergies. We had experts saying our youngest had Asthma, and needed inhalers, meds, and the whole nine yards. I didn't like all those drugs, and my searching led me to high doses of Quercetin. I still take a couple 500mg caps every day, not sure of the doseage I should be taking, but it is inexpensive and you could use it along with the "block." Let us know what works for you, and if you try just vaseline on Hank and if that helps I would like to know that too. |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 2:05 pm: Hi all,I just thought I'd chime in here and ask if any of you use Nose aids for your allergies ( They make them for horses too, they are called Flair Nasal strips). My husband has been using them for years, but I never really gave them a try. Until this past week. I have been taking CVS brand Nightime relief for months just to get a good nights sleep, this is very much unlike me because I do not like to take any kind of medicine, but I was unable to sleep through the night and was waking up every few hours. These past two weeks I have had a very bad cold which made it worse to sleep because I couldn't breathe. My husband said to try the nasal strips, which I did. For the first time in months I slept through the night, no meds. I have had the same successful full nights sleeps for the last 5 nights and this morning I woke up to find the black bags under my eyes (from lack of sleep) seem to be diminishing. These strips are an alternative to taking drugs if they work for you. Rachelle |

Posted on Saturday, Apr 25, 2009 - 3:42 pm: Rachelle, they do help. My youngest son suggested I use them. He used them playing football and thought they helped him and suggested I try them. I use them now when allergies or a cold really have me gasping for air at night. I've been a little hesitant to use them during the day, although the way I'm usually dressed I don't know why!My older son suggest using a Neti Pot also, and I think it helps a lot, especially if I use it right after working in the barn. Now Diane, if you can get Hank standing on his head and using a Neti Pot be sure and post a picture! |
