  Discussion on Enlarged Extensor Tendon?

I have a yearling colt that seems to have swelling in the extensor tendon that runs to the side and across the front of his left front cannon bone. He is not lame, there is no heat, and no tenderness to palpation. When I palpate the tendon it feels thicker on the left leg than on the right and is visually larger. I have noticed this for several days but did not think much of it as he was not displaying any signs of discomfort. There is no abrasion or sign of impact and I am not aware of any specific event that could have caused this however he and his half brother often roughhouse in the field. Should he be on stall rest, icing, bute? If the tendon has sustained an injury, why isn't he lame? Thank you! Susanne

Hello Susanne,
If you have an acute inflammatory swelling of the extensor tendon you should take it easy and use antiinflammatory therapy as you describe until the swelling subsides.

There are several possible explanations to why the horse is not lame. First the swelling you see may be around the tendon and not actually the tendon itself. Second injury to extensor tendons does not usually cause remarkable weight bearing lameness: the extensors do not work during weight bearing. They are used to advance the leg during the swing phase and their function is often redundant and spread over several tendons.

Thank you Dr.O, I will start on the antiinflammatory therapy!
