Hello, I have a 3 year old who just started in work about 30 days ago. He is barefoot. A week or so ago, he appeared to be coming up a little foot sore. He's getting shod tomorrow. I'm curious though, I started him on 1 g bute am/pm Sunday. I assumed that would help him stay comfortable (and maybe help resolve any secondary body soreness that may have occured). But today, he showed no improvement on the lunge. I was just wondering if the Bute should have had more effect, and if so, perhaps I need to be looking further into what it may be other than foot soreness. He just generally is less forward/willing. The RF is slightly off only when turning right. However, this foot turns out slightly, and it appears that the inside heel is wearing down more than the outside...There is no heat/swelling anywhere. Slight DP in both front. Any advice on whether the bute should've had more of an effect, would be appreciated!

Hello jacqueline, Phenylbutazone is effective for pain relief almost everywhere the cause is inflammation, like arthritis for instance. But this is not to say that any disease process cannot overcome the effects of the bute. So the bottom line is you cannot diagnose the cause of the lameness by the response to bute. Solar bruising is best diagnosed with a good exam including hoof testers. For more on this and some other characteristics of such bruising see, Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels DrO

Thanks, Dr. O, he did get front shoes on this AM, and was 100% after, so that was great! Love the site.
