I have a Leopard Appaloosa that has little black individual crusty looking sores on the outside (on one side only) of his sheath, covering an area about the size of a nickel. I can't get close enough to him to assess what's actually going on, although it does not appear to be oozing or anything. Could this be caused by midges or flies? I have a call into my vet. Meanwhile, do you have any ideas as to what this could be or how to treat? Thanks.

Sounds like it could} be insect related. Does he itch at it a lot? Could be any of a half dozen things, really. Are they big enough to be warts?

Hello Sharon, if these areas are non-pigmented skin, squamous cell carcinoma needs to be ruled out quickly as it can spread. See Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Otherwise there are many possibilities including fly irritation. We have articles on reducing fly irritation and midge irritation at Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Hair and Coat Problems / Itching / Irritated Skin. DrO
