My now 20 year old TB has been passing gas very frequently this spring. He had colic surgery in 2007 due to a lipoma wrapped around a portion of his intestine, resection was not needed but he developed a hernia as a result of a post-op infection. He does not have signs of colic, but the frequent gas worries me. He is on turnout 24/7, and gets only about a pound of Triple Crown Lite a day. Is the green grass the culprit? It has been very wet in VA this Spring and the grass is lush, a lot of clover. His pasture mates are on the same regimen and none of them have this problem.

Hello Agnes, Different animals do react differently to the same diets. We cannot say that is what is happening in this case but it certainly is a common enough observation. I have this cousin and when he eats broccoli... DrO

Dr.O, I wouldn't want to get your cousin and my BIL together at the same dinner table ! And Agnes, I have a 20+ QH mare that is the gassiest horse I have ever seen and has been for the 10+ yrs I've owned her! She is very healthy and has never coliced in her life, and though she's not the most "lady like" in the herd she is one of the happiest! You just don't want to be behind her on a trail ride

Thanks for your responses Dr. O. and Teri. I will not worry then unless I see signs of colic, which I am very familiar with.
