My mare came into heat and with the 107 afternoons, sweating, she has rubbed the inside of her back legs raw and her back legs are swollen. I cleaned the raw area and put corona on it, all I have right now. Is there anything else I can put on it?

Ingrid,
You might try Vaseline. My mare tore a "butt muscle" last Dec. (inside of back legs swollen and raw) and I used that until the vet checked her out. She then gave me some thing to put on that contained a steroid of sorts. Cleared it right up, but it was in Dec. so the heat wasn't a problem. Don't let it get infected. If it seems to be getting worse call your vet for advise.

Good Luck,

Shirl

I'd first cold hose her to help with the swelling and to get the area clean. Then probably any lubricating type ointment. The Corona does have some antibacterial properties which the vasaline doesn't have. Also, you might try Gold Bond powder or Desitin powder like mothers use on babies for diaper rash. In the hot weather it would prevent chafing perhaps more than the ointments. Bicycle riders use something called Monkey Butt powder for a similar problem.

Hello Ingrid,
Keeping the area clean and medicated with any soothing waterproof ointment will likely result in a cure but the quickest way to relieve soreness is by adding a touch of steroid-antibiotic combination like Panalog (Animax) cream under the ointment. Because she is in heat, I am afraid the sheer volume of fluid may overrun the powders but if clean and dry is possible these may help.
