There is a spot just above the hoof on the side of my 23-year-old thoroughbred gelding's right hind that has an area that gets very scabbed over - although the lump of material doesn't look entirely like a scab - it is quite spongy and grey. If it gets knocked off, it bleeds underneath.

I believe this is a spot where about 9 years ago, he got a deep puncture wound that went in as far as the bone.

I am wondering what this is and whether I should get it treated as it never heals - just gets covered over with this material that gets knocked off then bleeds again.

From your description, I would suggest having it examined and possily radiographed to asses the bone. There may be a splintered off piece that has not been able to work itself out.

Yes, Dr. O, I will have the vet look at it. It doesn't bother him and I think it has been like that for years but I didn't notice whatever it is getting knocked off and then bleeding underneath until the past few months.
