Do moles appear abruptly? I have a 3-year old filly who has recently grown what looks like a mole on her face. I'm watching the growth closely since I've been treating a sarcoid on her neck, but this growth is different. Like the sarcoid, it is a raised circular growth but unlike the sarcoid, this one is covered by hair. I don't want to be paranoid if it's just a mole but I ignored the sarcoid for a while until it started getting bigger and I really wish I hadn't.

Carla, it's possible that it is a melanoma..what color is your filly? I think melanomas are more likely to occur on a gray horse (although I believe they are also more likely to grow on an older horse, but not unheard of in young ones) This site has soom good info on melanomas. Go to Equine Diseases==>Skin Disease==>Bumps/nodules/warts/tumors==>Melanomas

She's black. It looks a lot like moles I've seen on horses before, you know the beautiful ones with hairs growing out of them ; ), I just wasn't sure how quickly they appeared (assuming they're like moles and freckles on humans and tend to just show up). It's on her right side, so it's hard to say exactly how long it's been there, but I know from photos it wasn't there last year. I wouldn't be surprised if it were another sarcoid...

I have a picture. You can see (hopefully) the lump just above her noseband.

Welcome Carla, There is not enough detail in your post or image to tell what is going on and if it really has hairs it throws off lots of common possibilities. Moles are something you are born with. Back up one from Frans suggestion and look at the article Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors. Not only does it describe what to look for it gives you some new vocabulary for describing bumps. A close-up with strong lighting coming from behind the photographer or flash might help too. DrO
