Dear Fellow Board Members, and Dr. O, About 5 or 6 months ago, I had asked for advice, read many old posts, and perused Dr. O's articles regarding heaves. Had been considering buying a 20 yo mare with frequent attacks, and it would be my first horse. The advice, all rolled up together with the main themes intact, made me realize that with good management, it was highly possible to ease or eradicate bouts of respiratory distress. I am very happy to say that my horse rapidly improved! Her bouts of heaves have nearly dissipated, and I'm left with a lively, wonderful old girl. My terrific, caring barn owner/manager made a spot for my horse in one of the run-in sheds, hay had been eliminated on her arrival to this barn, and judicious use of Dexamethasone at the first sign of distress have worked for her. She has excellent activity tolerance, so it appears any permanent damage is minimal. Thank you all for your kind and wise advice. It has helped a horse have a better quality of life. Cher Mc.

That's great news, Cher. That's what it's all about . . . giving these wonderful animals the best caring and consideration and training we are able to give . . . As you have implied . . . it brings joy to both the horses and to us.

Thank you for passing on the gospel on heaves. All y'all out there still struggling cause you think wetting your hay effective and still bringing the horse into the barn because you think it does not make that much difference, your horse can be just like Chers, really. DrO
