Hi everyone I am really enjoying this forum and everones willingness to share their knowledge.I have a 15 year old appendix mare who has always had a problem with stocking up on her hind legs. She seems to hold a lot of fluid under her chin also,
she is not over weight. When I was looking to buy her I had a vet test done and they told me she had a very minor heart murmer but nothing to worry about. My vet also checked her and had the same diagnosis. She has had crooked back feet (flares) for quite some time.I got a new farrier and he straightened her out but she has always had alot of stress in her hind quarter which I feel is probably from her feet. The swelling comes and goes for no apparent reason.I thought it could be from too much protein so I keep her on timothy hay and maybe 5lbs alfalfa because she is a little ribby.I don't ride much because we are having some training issues, she also sprained her leg 6 weeks ago but that has pretty much healed .I ice her legs but the swelling just comes and goes, does anyone have any Idea what her problem could be,any Ideas would be helpful. She is not lame at all when her legs are swollen. Thank you

Hello Lorraine,
We have an article on this condition that lists possible causes but I assure you it has nothing to do with protein in the diet. For more see Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Stocking Up.
