Hi, In reading the article on HYPP, it sounds that 50% of the offspring of a N/H sire or dam could result in N/H foal. I have heard conflicting information from people that if you breed an N/N to an N/H, you will only have a 25% chance of an N/H foal. Can anyone help me? Due to the recent rule changes with HYPP in AQHA, I would prefer to stay away from a potential N/H foal, but I have my eyes set on a N/H stud and just want to know my chances. If it is a 50% chance, I will likely stay away from it, but if it is only 25%, I may take a second look.

A "N/N" bred to a "H/N" yields a "N/H" 50% of the time. (Note that this has been edited from my original incorrect statement of a 25% chance.) Something you need to understand is that a large percentage of the appearance of the stallion you are interested in is because of the HYPP gene he carries. HYPP makes muscles less efficient the result is that it takes more to do the same amount of work. That is why this gene was so popular in decades of QH breeding, even before we even knew there was such a gene, these horses look like "muscle men". If you don't get the gene you don't get the "look". Of course many of these horses have important other genes that need to be preserved but realize that what you see in not what you want, if I understand your post right. DrO

Dr. O, Did I read you correctly? You said that a N/N bred to a N/H yields a N/H 25% of the time? Did you not mean to say that it will yield a N/H 50% of the time? If you do a Venn diagram you will see that the H gene can combine with either of the N genes to produce a N/H combination 2 out of 4 times. I believe that that is 50%. Respectfully, Ginny

Boy you would have thought I would have heard Mendel groaning in his grave, Virginia. You are exactly right and thank you for the correction. That has to be worth about 3 months added to your membership. Shawna there is a 50% chance of the defect being passed and I will correct my mistake above. Instead of a spellchecker I should have put in a brainchecker. DrO
