Hi,My mare has a problem with stocking up and I have checked out the sites here on this subject,my concern is that stocking up can be related to heart problems, liver, and kidney problems. So far my mare seems healthy but what signs should I be looking for in regards to underlying problems. Thanks Lorraine

I would say swellings in other areas, depression, weight loss, exercise intolerance. For more specific signs see:- Equine Diseases » Urinary System » Kidney Disease and Failure in the Horse
- Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Mouth, Esophagus, and Liver » Liver Disease and Failure

6 year old QH stud, nov 2005 rear legs (both) swelled tremendously. Vet treated with anti-inflammatories, rechecked horse a week later, noted improved swelling, but horse look distented and not feeling well, treated the horse for colic. December (I come along). Stud is still swollen in both rear legs, skin is healing from breaking from swelling. Horse still seems in extreme discomfort. A month later I see the horse again. Now both front and back legs are swelling. Horse seems distended again, in discomfort, has lost weight and is not extremely interested in food. He has also lost a lot of muscle in his rear end. I wonder if he has been putting all his weight on the front. this seems like it is swelling, not inflammation, but his gums are good and last time we check the temp was norm. suggestions what direction should I go next. could this be EAV or rhino/flu, but he has no resp, or nasal discharge. help

Justine, we recommend you get a second opinion for this poor horse. We have an article that lists many of the possibilities and some distinguishing characteristics see, Equine Diseases » Lameness » Leg Swellings » Hot & Painful Legs. DrO

Blood work is suggesting possible internal absess. white cell is 28 amongst other indication of fighting such a thing. I have never encountered an "internal absess" could you elaborate for me. thanks Justine

I am uncertain why an internal abscess cause swelling in the legs Justine. What does the veterinarian suggest as the cause of the internal abscesses and how does this relate to the swelling in the legs? The article Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Pigeon Fever, Dryland Strangles, & Distemper explains about clinical signs, diagnosis, and treatment of a disease that causes internal abscesses. yes well I am as confused as you. Except I am concerned that this are the residual effects of a mild case of strangles.... will check the info you reccomended. thank you so much. Justine

If the internal abscesses are thought to be do to the Strangles organisim, see also the article on Strangles for bastard strangles treatment. DrO
