Dr. O, I bought a Percheron/Warmblood mare a year ago, that began displaying odd behavior last fall, culminating in her bucking under saddle when asked to canter this past March. It was suggested to me that she was "being marish" etc., but I called my veterinarian, and she was diagnosed with a sore back. The mare would not keep a chiropractic adjustment for more than a day or two, and had back spasms in the L3-4-5 area. Scanning your website for "sore backs", I ran across your discussion of EPSM, and all her behavior problems were all there - not being able to hold her feet up for the farrier, trailering issues, all down the line. I immediately called my vet, cut out the mare's grain, and began 24 turnout and either riding or lunging her nearly every day. In 6 weeks time, I can now canter her again under saddle (though I can tell there is still some hesitancy on her part). I would have never suspected EPSM to be the cause of her back problems and other behavioral issues - almost everyone I talked to said she was just being "bad", but thanks to you, I have my sweet girl back. I know it will take some more recovery, and I know that there may be a few issues here and there, but her flexibility and willingness are returning (I was feeding her more grain than her previous owner, and it was the wrong thing to do!) Just wanted you to know that your advice to check out EPSM made a big difference to us!
