In the last week or so I have noticed my foal's joints clicking when I lift up his feet. It's difficult to tell exactly where the noise comes from but I suspect the fetlocks on at least 2 legs are affected. In addition, there seems to be quite a lot of mobility in these joints (fetlocks) when lifted.

There is no swelling and he moves well and does not appear to be in any discomfort. He is turned out for about 10 hours each day, the rest of the time in a stable. What I would like to know is whether this is normal or whether I should be worried about some form of DOD starting?

Also, I have noticed his knees seem very dimpled and soft (not swollen) in the front. Again, is this normal at this stage? I will try and post a photo to illustrate what I mean!

It would be great to hear other peoples views on the above. He is my first foal so I am unsure as to what is normal!!

Cathy

PS My vet doesn't seem overly concerned

Hello Cathy,
Clicking joint is pretty common in horses and not associated with an increase incidence of disease. Like a human popping a knuckle we believe most of these are joint fluid rapidly transiting small spaces in the joint.

Thank you very much Dr O. Would you expect the clicking to be a lifelong condition or will Harley grow out of it? Funnily enough, his mum started clicking in her hocks during pregnancy when in trot although I haven't noticed it much since she has foaled.

Attached is a photo of one of Harley's knees - unfortunately it doesn't show the dimples very well. Is this normal? Any views would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Cathy, please would you show us the rest of him too?
His legs suggest that he's nice to look at.

Cathy, I would expect him to decrease clicking. I cannot really assess whether these knees are normal or not from the photo.

Thanks Dr O. Susie, I will take an up to date photo of him tomorrow and post it for you! He does have quite nice colouring!

Here he is Susie, looking a bit drenched as we'd just had torrential rain! His name is Harley (Harlequin). He is 5 weeks and is a coloured warmblood.Harley at 5 weeks
