Posted on Saturday, Jul 25, 2009 - 1:03 am: It's unusual for a horse to loose weight so fast. Is he drawn in at the flanks which might make him look thinner? If so, does he appear to be in pain? Is he drinking? eating? have a temp? having difficulty breathing? I'd make sure he's getting a lot of fluids. If he won't drink, give him senior feed soaked in water and see if he'll slurp it up. If he seems to be in pain or has a fever I'd give him bute. If you do a search here under medications you can find info on it if you aren't familiar with it. If you don't have any, you need a vet to sell it to you in most areas. You can get horse aspirin at most feed/farm supplies which will help some. Has he been exposed to anything you know of? Had a strangles vacination? |

Try adding something enticing to the water, like apple juice. Check your hay for dust and mold or something that might induce a cough. Other than that, can you think of any more medical history? We need more to go on....You're right to get the vet out as soon as possible. |

Posted on Saturday, Jul 25, 2009 - 2:00 am: I got him as a rescue, have had him for a year. The only problem he has had, is he was under weight when i got him. So it's been a journey. He was looking really healthy. He is eating & drinking but not like normal. I do give him soaked beet pellets & senior grain. I feel really bad for him. I will put the apple juice in his water. I can get bute at my feed store, so i will pick some up tomorrow. Thank you so much for helping with advice. |
