Posted on Saturday, Jul 25, 2009 - 7:48 pm: I guess this is the appropriate place. Here is my other thread that this is a continuation of in a way https://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/3/319545.html So I tried to make a Duct tape/vet wrap shoe and I don't think I got it quite right because of my lack of patience as usual! I always forget to get BEFORE pics and videos. When I called Hank into the paddock area...which is very hard and gravely he slinked slowly along the fence line in the grass part, obviously sore and avoiding the hard ground. Rachelle mentioned this Duct tape shoe so I tried it and I will say he is more comfortable. When he walked out he didn't walk along the paddock fence as he has been doing, but still looked a little tender...I think I have to do some modifying, you know how first tries are Interesting enough once the "shoes" were on he started resting his right hind I thought that a good sign! So came in the house to get the camera and video him walking out and take pics of the "shoe" So here's what we have and it needs fixing I think. I put duct tape shims around his hoof wall taped them in place, then vet wrapped it. Pic of shoe Here's vid of him walking out of the paddock https://picasaweb.google.com/hank97/20090725DuShoe?authkey=Gv1sRgCOKlxbmsmoKoQg#slideshow/5362532154843017298 going out https://picasaweb.google.com/hank97/20090725DuShoe?authkey=Gv1sRgCOKlxbmsmoKoQg#slideshow/5362532580689441698 |

In general, you have the right idea and putting the duct tape underneath the vet wrap will add an extra layer of protection. When I do these wraps I split a roll of vet wrap between the two feet and I duct tape over the vetwrap ( I cut my pieces before hand because I find the duct tape easier to work with in pieces rather than trying to use the roll. I use three pieces and I go from the heel bulb 3/4's of the way around the hoof ( 1 piece) then from the other heel bulb 3/4's of the way around the other way ( so the toe gets two layers, and the tape by the heel bulbs overlap) the third piece just reinforces the toe. If you can get the vet wrap and the tape to fit around the foot below the hairline thats good and you won't have to worry about the vetwrap being too tight. Rachelle |

I folded over 4 big strips of duct tape and applied them at the toe with the 3 strips of duct tape you mention then vet wrapped...which brings his toe off the ground and he weights the heel better. I have tried a version of your method and it didn't give his sole enough relief, crushed down too much. He walked pretty good through the paddock tonight when they came up...actually very nicely considering the way he had been moving. I'm sure it will fall off tonight. I can see he has grown a LITTLE hoof wall since his trim. I'm actually more worried about his rear fetlock then his hooves. I was glad to see him finally rest his back hoof comfortably. Thanks for the idea |

He walked through the paddock fairly comfortable yet this morning for his breaskfast. His DP was back to normal also! I did not bute him last night. He is VERY comfortable in pasture, I just don't have the courage to leave them out there for long periods They are out about 4-6 hours, and when they come in he is always moving better. Trying to figure out how to determine if they can stay out longer without risking founder? I guess I will read the fat horse articles again and see if there is a hint in there to the ans. |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 26, 2009 - 10:17 am: Thanks Dr.O. We are making a duct tape "shoe" I don't want to cover his sole as it gets soggy and soft. Just enough to lift the sole at the toe off the ground. It seems to have worked but does need a little modifying I think. |
