Dr. O, I've attached a photo of my 14 month old colt's legs. I marked the area of concern with the purple circle. You'll see the larger bump on the cannon and a smaller one below. This injury happened about three weeks ago when I brought my colt to a clinic and he was put in a stall with a mesh wire gate. When he saw his stable mate leaving the stall next to him, he got nervous, reared up and got his two front feet on top of the stall gate. Luckily I was standing near by and backed him off. There was very little swelling at that time, and no heat or lameness then or even now. But the cannon bump is now bigger. Should I be concerned? It does not seem to bother him at all but since the bump is bigger I thought it wise to check. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

I'm sorry but I am having difficulty posting the photo reference for the message above. The Upload Attachment button does not seem to be functioning. I will try it again tomorrow. Thank you.

Looks like a popped splint to me.. My mare had something just like this .. On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Hello Diana, The problem with trying to assess images is that it is often hard to exactly localize the bump (is that on the cannon or lateral splint?) and we cannot feel the bump for it's characteristics though I understand you find it bony, cool, and nonpainful. So any diagnosis should be considered speculative. That all said, I agree with Ann, these are typical for splints (if over the splint bone) and you can read more about them at Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Diseases of the Splint Bones. Thanks Ann for your comment. And thanks to Dr O. On another look and feel of the bump (and after reading that informative article), I think it is indeed a bump on the splint bone. Thanks for setting me straight on that. There is so much info on this site. It is really a fantastic resource--thanks again!
