two months ago my gelding stepped in a hole at a horseshow and has got worse and worse since, we tested him for EPM and have had him on dex for 2 weeks he can walk ok but sometimes crosses his back legs at a walk. but cannot trot or lope with any control of this legs

Has he been checked for spinal injury? Have you looked at the articles here on HA regarding lamenss? Is there a chiropractic vet in your area? I would be very suspecious of injury to his spine or "lower" back. Until Dr.O comments, read the lameness articles if you haven't already and see if anything seems to apply to your guy.

Welcome Barbara,
The diagnosis seems straight forward. Immediately following a observed accident the horse has problems with hind limb incoordination. Certainly the vast majority of the time the cause would be damage to the spinal cord secondary from the accident. Is there a question you want to ask about this or is there a reason to question this diagnosis?
