I have a 22 yr old Arabian mare who has arthritis in her knees. One knee is worse than the other. She has been injected with cortisone every 6 months for the last year. This has really helped however, the last time of the injection which was in July has not lasted as long. She is also on Performance Plus CJ. She used to be on previcox but that really isn't working so I have been giving her a small dosage of bute everyday. I also started applying DMSO on her knee which has helped some. I walk her everyday but unfortunately I can ride her anymore. I would like to know if it is safer for me to have another cortisone injection administered again to see if this will help. My vet has informed me that the only other solution would be an injection of something else which is very expensive. Any advice?

Hello MSHoney, We have tons of advice MSH, check out the Treatment for Acute Arthritis and Exacerbations of Chronic DJD of the article on Overview of Arthritis. I also want you to spend time with the Long Term Management of DJD. I think reading and understanding these two sections will go a long way toward helping your horse do as well as possible. Since we do not know what expensive treatment the veterinarian is recommending I really cannot comment on that but I suspect it is one of the treatments described in the article, perhaps reviewing them will joggle your memory. Specifically the steroid injection could probably be repeated but if one of the repositol forms is being used this cannot be kept up for long. Early on arthritis of the knee can usually be dealt with and the horse continued to be used lightly but once it gets bad pasture sound is about all that is fair to the horse. DrO
