I have a 6 year old Friesian cross mare. I noticed lately that one of her hocks is very midly swollen at the point of the hock. She is not lame at all. I would like to err on the side of caution. What is a typical course of action for something like this? Thanks, Brenda

Welcome Brenda, Ahhhh that can be a very expensive stipulation: "I want to err on the side of caution". With this in mind the next step would be to ultrasound the area and determine which tissues are swollen. There are several structures that lie under this point and to know which is swollen allows you to err on the side of caution with the most appropriate therapy began as early as possible. On the other hand a acute mild swelling without lameness on the point of the hock is often the result of trauma. Rest and NSAID's curative. If this does not work the ultrasound is still possible and if you have rested the horse unlikely to have caused further damage. DrO

Dr. O, Thanks for the advice. Tomorrow I will start her on stall rest and a bute twice a day. I will hand walk her so she doesn't get too restive and give my vet a call tomorrow to see about the ultrasound. Thanks! Brenda
