My 2.5 year old filly took what looks a direct kick to the teeth from a new horse that moved in to the corral next door. One tooth is cracked in half (horizontally at midpoint) and another is pushed in, and the gum is bleeding around the top of the tooth. it appears to be pushed in a little. What can be done about a broken tooth? Does a 2.5 year old grow/replace damaged teeth? this just happened overnight. I'm in a bad spot financially and really have no money for vet work. This is my first horse and she has been the best I could ask for. I'm worried sick about her pain and future issues with accepting a bit. What would happen if I let nature take it's course? thanks, bob

Welcome Robert, Let's back up a bit. I often get calls from folks with a horse 2 1/2 years old concerned there is something wrong with their horses two middle incisors. This almost always turns out they are looking the adult teeth erupting in which can appear quite irregular. The adults look "pushed in" when not fully erupted but the baby tooth lost. And sometimes the baby tooth sits on the adult a while, which might look like the horizontal crack you describe. A little gum bleeding is not unheard of but makes me wonder if there is not something wrong. For images of this process see Horse Care » Routine Horse Care » Aging Horses and Incisor Anatomy. What are the chances you could get some good pictures of this. Note this is not a diagnosis just speculation and if there is any indiction of discomfort by the young horse you should call your veterinarian. DrO

I would like to give closure to this post by saying Dr.O's theory appeared to be on on money. The tooth I thought was cracked was the new tooth coming in. The bleeding from top of other tooth was due in part to perhaps, new growth coming in and some type of biting or gnawing action. However,my neighbor reported they were fighting through the fence pretty bad--so that may have caused some injury to the mouth that induced the bleeding from the loose tooth. A couple days later mouth appeared fine. Thanks.
