Discussion on "moderate changes to navicular bone" | |

Posted on Friday, Sep 18, 2009 - 9:01 pm: Hi, Dr. O --My daughter rode some jumping horses in Europe last week and really liked a mare who she was ready to buy but her veterinarian, upon receiving the X-rays, stated that there is moderate deterioration of the navicular bones in both front feet though the deterioration is similar so that the feet match. The mare also has a bone chip in one of her hocks, though that can be fixed. She is out of great blood lines and we were thinking about doing some embryo transfers while she pursues a continued jumping career, but now we don't know what to do. I am going to try to download the X-rays so that you can look at them. Here is a U-Tube of her jumping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyYGm6B5kSM She seems to jump well and is very careful about trying to leave the jumps up. If the European Veterinarians think she is okay, are they just overly optimistic about her future? I am doing to have to study how to download the X-rays and add them though it may be hard to tell much from the small size. |

Posted on Saturday, Sep 19, 2009 - 9:34 am: Vicki, though I would be interested in looking at them, I do not give actionable advice on radiographs. I recommend for a valued second opinion you send the originals to a equine radiologist and orthopedic surgeon for evaluation, perhaps one of the veterinary schools would be a good choice.DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Sep 19, 2009 - 11:02 am: Thanks, Dr. O --We could not get the radiographs to a workable size anyway. After cropping, they were still 4 times too big and certainly can see that it would be impossible to tell anything from them. We will know more early next week when my daughter's veterinarian gets back into town and she could easily have them examined at the veterinary school, so that is a great idea. Thanks for this suggestion. |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 8:40 am: There is a way to get images small enough for this site and still have quite a bit of detail.Screen resolution of even the best monitors is less than 96 DPI (dots per inch) technically they are called pixels. Images are usually much higher resolution than is needed for on screen viewing. Perhaps as high as 1200 or even 2400 DPI. If you are using a PC (not a MAC) there is a little used button on your keyboard labeled Print Screen or PrtSC something close to it. Holding down the Alt key while pressing the Print Screen key captures a screen resolution image of what ever is currently in the window on your screen. Holding down the Control Key while pressing Print Screen captures an image of the whole screen. Either way they are at your screen resolution, and a lot smaller than the original. Paste the new image into what ever software you use to edit images and save it as a new file, otherwise you will overwrite your original file. It will probably be small enough to fit on this site with only minor editiing. See |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 9:58 am: Thanks for the tip, Guy. I hadn't thought of that.If using a Mac, use the "Grab" app. You find it in the Utilities Folder in your Applications. |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 10:46 am: After grabbing and saving the image, drag it into iPhoto. Then select "share," and on the DrOp-down menu, select "export" to resize the image. I'll admit, I like the size that Guy gets better than the size that I can get. |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 12:15 pm: The problem is people confuse "image size" with "file size". Though related they are different things. The trick to getting a good image posted is to first start with the original and crop out unneeded stuff around the periphery, next you resize the image to about 500 pixels wide. Then you resize the file using image processing software. As Guy notes todays digital cameras will take far more detail than need be to get a good image posted onto a computer screen. By removing the extra stuff image processing can often take a 300k or 3meg image file and reduce it to 30k and yet look nearly identical to the bigger file size image. It just takes the right software. We offer two for download that have worked for out members at Help & Information on Using This Site » Uploading Images and Files Into a Posting.DrO |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 3:24 pm: Thanks. As one who is extremely technologically challenged, I will discuss this with my daughter when we can get together again. She has to help me with any such pursuits. |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 6:15 pm: Suzie, I can't wait to try your suggestion! Ever since I got this imac, I've been photo challenged. I had my old computer down pretty good and have been working on getting to know how to do all the stuff I used to do!Thank you so much. Vickie, sorry we got off track on your thread. I watched the video and it sure looks like a nice horse! Hope it vets out okay for you! erika |

Posted on Sunday, Sep 20, 2009 - 7:32 pm: Thanks, Erika,It is a fun video to watch, although now I am trying to determine whether the manner of landing after each jump says something about Circa's navicular bones, although this mare seems to enjoy her job and does manage to do it well. Currently it is not looking as though this importation and purchase will go forward due to advice from a variety of jumping acquaintances, but better to know now rather than later. There will be a firm decision made sometime this week and then my daughter will decide whether or not to Vet check any of the other horses that she rode who fit what she is looking for. |

Posted on Friday, Sep 25, 2009 - 5:32 pm: My daughter's Veterinarian had a change of opinion upon seeing the additional radiographs. We are still awaiting the results of standard blood testing but it is looking good that this purchase will go through after all. Additional opinions are in the works too, but here is what the Vet now says: "The radiographs from Europe of the stifle and navicular skyline appear to be normal. I think this horse is a minimal risk to buy and now seeing the skyline views I feel more confident that re-sale in the US would not be as sticky as I thought. She is not lame, is healthy and now her radiographs are within normal limits for age and breed of horse. If you need more information do not hesitate to call me." |

Posted on Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 - 12:17 pm: Additional Vet checks of the X-rays were good and blood work fine.Circa arrived in the U.S. on Sunday and as of yesterday is at my daughter's trainer's farm as it has been approved as a quarantine site. Lucky girl is very excited and I hope that this mare will work out great for her. As for me and my riding, I am very happy with my beloved Arabs and paint who are aging and of little monetary value, but are precious and priceless to me. I'll stick with jumping logs in the forest. |

Posted on Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 - 6:55 pm: How cool I hope they are very happy together!Did she give up on the other horse that had the back problem? Or is she a 2 horse owner now...we do seem to collect them. |

Posted on Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 - 9:38 pm: Thanks, Diane.Well, she has three of them right now, which is certainly one more than she needs or really wants. She has a Holsteiner gelding who is a really awesome and very careful and accomplished jumper. He has been a great competitor and won quite a few prizes. She won't sell him but may lease him. There are already some interested in leasing him as everybody loves him. USEF Show rules will cause her to be unable to show horses at different levels in the classes where she actively competes. Her mare Fancy, who I rehabbed here is doing well, and this month has worked her way up to some trotting. She will have another US before she canters and then probably another after she progresses from over cavalettis to some low jumps. If she is brought back to soundness for higher level jumping she will be sold to an accomplished rider. She is a very nice mare for the right rider. Rather than trade her and get next to nothing for her, my daughter is gambling that she will be sound and competitive again. The show jumping world is something that I enjoy watching, but far removed from what I do with horses. But this has always been my daughter's dream and she is very dedicated to this pursuit, as is my niece. Too much stress for me. Team riding was as much stress as I cared to deal with. |

Posted on Friday, Feb 5, 2010 - 10:24 am: Wow, what a wonderfully expressive and pleasant looking horse! Thanks for posting the video. She is really nice. Congratulations! Was that in Ocala? I heard you complaining about the weather, I know we were chilly there for a while. I've been watching the Equus Games in Wellington lately. Fun! Erika |
Member: vickiann |
Posted on Friday, Feb 5, 2010 - 4:34 pm: Thanks, Erika. She is a horse who is loaded with personality. Everybody is loving her. The video was taken at Ocala/pre-HITS. I wasn't able to get there for any of it on account of being tied up with all the problems on my farm so was glad someone managed to get a few videos. My niece used to compete at Wellington every year, and when she was still alive, my sister loved going with her there during the HITS season. My niece's barn started going to Gulfport the first season following the quarantine that happened in Wellington, and liked it so much they have stayed with that program. It is too bad that my daughter and niece rarely are in the same place at the same time, though I have gotten to see them both competing in Lexington for a couple of shows. I love to go to the shows and have been fortunate to see some good victories for the girls but in a way I think they don't really care if family members get there as it can sometimes be a distraction for them. Will you be in Wellington for HITS? |

Posted on Friday, Feb 5, 2010 - 6:01 pm: Vicki, I don't mean to sound dense, but what is HITS? I am going back to Palm Beach on Tuesday, will be there 'til end of March minimum.Trying to get some polo lessons under my belt in Wellington with Luis Escobar. But the weather didn't cooperate last week--too wet, they didn't want to tear up the fields. I feel spoiled down there because they televise all the horse shows in HD! I even saw the girl who gave me my (one!) dressage lesson compete on her younger horse. Fun! That is one special mare you have. If you bring her to Wellington, be sure to let me know, will you? I would definitely come and watch with you! |

Posted on Friday, Feb 5, 2010 - 7:37 pm: Diane and Erika,My daughter IS a very lucky girl (though she is grown up and an adult now), and I am happy for her because I think that she deserves it. She is a fine rider and a good person too. Erika, HITS stands for "Horses in the Sun" and that is a competitive circuit where shows go on all over the country throughout the year. The two locations for these shows in Florida are (North)Ocala and Wellington. But they go on in many other states as well. Check it out at this site: https://www.hitsshows.com/ My daughter is an active competitor in the Sterling-Marshall Classics, where she has done quite well over the past few years. My niece is a top rider in the northeastern region of the country. She is about to graduate from college although not yet 21, and plans lots of horse riding, horse-related work, and competitions. She has been invited to be an international competitor, and though much younger than my daughter, is jumping much higher, but she started seriously competing at a younger age with support of family. My daughter's horses probably won't go to Wellington, because when the big shows are happening there, she will be in Ocala, but they will go to Lexington and Atlanta. It would be fun to meet you somewhere along the show circuit! I don't get away to take in the shows too often, because I have my hands full here at home, but someday I will get away again, I hope. |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 6, 2010 - 7:53 pm: Vicki, thanks for posting the video. She is a beautiful mare and looks to be doing very good for a youngster. Most impressive! You'd enjoy Erika a lot. I think you two would have a lot in common. Just beware of cliff edges and you'll get along fine! |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 - 11:17 am: Thanks, Sara.Heights scare me greatly, although I have ridden pretty close to the extreme edges of some bad, potential falls. My boy Lance has always taken the best care of us both. |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 - 11:49 am: Another thing you and Erika have in common! My "downfall" is June Bugs. I can take on the world, but don't let a June Bug near me. Seriously, I know you and Erika would enjoy each other a lot; at some point you must meet in person.I look forward to watching your mare progress. Of course, this means you have to keep posting video links! |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 - 3:15 pm: Sara, thanks for setting up the playdates, ha ha!! Too funny that you remember my paralysis at being near the edge of the Grand Canyon--but any sane person would be terrified by that precipice!!Re June bugs: when we first moved from Manhattan to our farm, I had some new friends over for barbeque. For dessert, I served ice cream with Magic Shell--you know, the chocolate sauce that hardens on the ice cream... My friend Kathy was munching away on the crunchy chocolate and ice cream when she suddenly shot out of her chair and ran to the sink, gagging the whole way. Evidently, in the dark she had plastered down a June beetle in her Magic Shell! Wasn't 'til she felt LEGS in her mouth that she realized there was more than chocolate crunching! |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 7, 2010 - 4:09 pm: Nasty! Can't claim to have a fear of June bugs myself, but sure would hate to try eating one. |

Posted on Monday, Feb 8, 2010 - 7:29 am: Oh yuck, Erika! I'll never serve something dark & crunchy on my deck, in the summer again....has Kathy ever come over for dessert again??? |

Posted on Monday, Feb 8, 2010 - 10:17 am: Ha ha! Fran, you obviously didn't grow up with a big brother! Mine used every opportunity to sneak vile things into unsuspecting snacks...chocolate covered bugs were a standout, bought at an Asian food store...a worm in my red licorice stick--I should have known when he offered to SHARE!!!Back to your thread, though, Vicki! I will check out the HITS site and see if any dates coincide with dog lure coursing up that way. You never know who will show up! In the meantime, enjoy that lovely new mare. I am over the moon about her. |

Posted on Monday, Feb 8, 2010 - 4:41 pm: Funny, Erika. Actually, I did grow up with a big brother but we were in cahoots against our little sister...she got the brunt of our bad behavior...(sorry to hijack your thread, Vicki!) |

Posted on Monday, Feb 8, 2010 - 6:00 pm: Aha Fran! The evil big sister....had one of those, too.Actually we all got along great for the most part, but I was the baby; and being the one who was easy to "get a rise out of"-- well, I don't have to explain it to you, do I? My husband would say I still am easy to stir up! Ha! |

Posted on Monday, Feb 8, 2010 - 7:30 pm: Not to worry, Fran.As my life is now revolving around the doctoring of two horses (it could always be more!), I enjoy any outside frivolity. Like Jimmy Buffet says "If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane." |

Posted on Thursday, Dec 9, 2010 - 10:28 pm: Just want to update this discussion to say that this horse has been amazing. As a 7-year old she took second in nationals in Chicago only taking a rail down on the final jump of the jump off. Going for it all resulted in a second place, which was very respectable. "The pair were the only two to jump clear throughout the 3-round competition but Sergio Campos’ blistering pace of 36.606 seconds cost him dearly at the last obstacle." See: https://youngjumpers.com/yjcblog/archives/146 $20,000 YJC 7/8 year old midwestern championship. Circa continues to be an extremely careful jumper who can do it all and who is catching a lot of attention. The photos of her around the course in any competition are amazing. She has got it! Besides that she is just plain beautiful. Everyone loves her. You may be hearing more about this horse in the future! |
