Posted on Saturday, Oct 3, 2009 - 11:31 pm: Hello Dr. O and all,I could use some care/management advice over the weekend. My gelding this past week got a little carried away running in the pasture and came in with what a hind leg slightly swollen over the front of a hind cannon. He was not lame or painful. I briefly hyDrO'd the leg and wrapped it overnight. The following morning, it looked normal, and he moved normally with no change or lameness. Yesterday, he was worked by the trainer. Today, he has moderate swelling and slight heat in that hind limb with noticable swelling across the front of that cannon. He is weight bearing normally, not painful on palpation, and appears comfortable. Of course, it is Saturday which means that it will be Monday before I can talk to my vet. Early this afternoon, he was hyDrO'd, a standing bandage placed, and given 1 gram of bute. He will be kept in a stall and only hand walked. I can also ice the leg as often as need be. Tomorrow morning I will be checking on him. Are there any other recommedations you have? And, baring any other problems that present itself, what is your experience with extensor swellings? Appreciate any advice you may have. Heather |

If a horse is sound it is unlikely there is significant damage to the lower leg but exceptions exist and your treatment plan sounds reasonable from what you describe.DrO |

Posted on Sunday, Oct 4, 2009 - 9:53 pm: Dr. O,Thank you for the help. I have taken a few pics from my phone for reference. The frontal part of the cannon is no longer swollen today. Overnight, he did get his bandage off (helpful he was), so didn't get all the support hoped for. From what I can tell, he is not lame or painful. However, there is still a lot of filling in the lower leg. The weather was poor today, so handwalking was kept to the isle way. Did find 2 areas on the outside of the leg where the hair is scuffed off. No "wounds" or punctures at all. I am continuing the prior mentioned treatment until told otherwise. Let me know if anything in the pics is particularly worrysome to you. I worry as a hobby, therefore my judgement is void. Will also talk to the vet in the morning and decide if we need to pursue xrays/ultrasound, or tincture of time. Thank you, Heather |

Areas with the hair scruffed off can be considered wounds even if they are not deep enough to expose bleeding tissue and the one thing you have mentioned that may indicate a cause.DrO |
