This is a 9 yr old mare, so sign of lameness when walking around barn, but too wet to ride right now. Has bilateral bruises on 3 white feet, assume 4th, but it's black. They are about egg size, and on the sides, not front, of feet. Can tell if there is any heat, but no sign of trauma.

Has been suggested that she hit something with feet, but that would be front, not sides. Called farrier, he said must be kicking in stall, but that would only account for back feet.

She wears boots on front feet when riding. Last ridden Wed. Daughter did not notice bruises then, but that does not mean they weren't there. Eating fine, no changes in feed, medicine, etc. Hoof4e

Are you sure this isn't a stain? What color are the boots?

Boots are black, and only worn on front feet. These are on all feet, and there is nothing I can think of that would stain her feet. In person, it is obviously deep in hoof. Ever seen anything like that?

Michelle, I frequently see this on white feet. I think it doesn't show up on black hooves, but it's not uncommon and in my experience it's not significant. That is, it doesn't correlate to lameness, etc.

Hello Michelle,
are the hooves beginning to flare at the point of or just below the bruising?
