My 6-month old Paint/WB filly has had swelling in her lymph nodes under the jaw since at least June. The swelling is not symmetrical, it is definitely larger on one side than the other. One side is the size of half a small walnut, the other side is about half that. She had a short bout with what was diagnosed as a minor upper respiratory infection in July: two days of a 102 temp, a minor cough, a little snotty nose. She was given a course of Sulfa and symptoms improved almost immediately. The lymph node swelling preceded the infection, BTW. Since the minor infection, she has been totally fine. Eating, drinking, playing, etc. I took her temp a couple of times a week due to the continued swelling of the lymph nodes, but since July her temp has been totally normal. There was one other horse in our barn, a yearling, who had similar symptoms (but no swelling). His sx started before my filly; the intermittent cough took a little longer to resolve, but he had a temp for only one day. Again, no major problem. In Sept, due to the continuation of the swelling, my vet came and did a series of three injections to boost the immune system. (I don't recall the name, will get it tomorrow...sorry). Unfortunately, no change. She has not gotten worse, but has not gotten better. My vet says that this just 'might be her' and not to worry about it. But of course I do. Do you have anything to offer, Dr O? I have looked at the articles I could find, but nothing I was able to locate is on point with this situation. If there is anything else, please steer me in the right direction!

Hello dieliz, Prolonged enlargement of the submandibular lymph nodes following a respiratory condition is a common event in horses and does not need treatment. In time the lymph nodes will usually go down though occasionally one will go ahead and abscess before healing. As long as your horse is healthy just be patient. DrO

Yes, she is absolutely normal in every other way. Thank you for the added assurance! Now where do I get that patience stuff?
