This is under eye diseases but nothing is wrong with the eyes in question, just wondering about the unusual color of them. We currently have on trial basis a teenage grade mostly-QH gelding. While most horses have solid brown irises or blue in some cases, this horse has lighter brown with some swirling. It looks almost like a tiger eye. I've seen it only once before on an Appaloosa, and wondered if anyone has any insight (sorry for the pun).

Me again. I should have said the gelding's eyes look more like lion eyes, not tiger.

Hazel eyes? Like on a champagne horse? https://www.ichregistry.com/images/Sweet_Champagne_-_eye.jpg

Hard to visualize exactly from your description, but if the eye is what I imagine, I have seen this in a Holsteiner mare (bay), that was boarded at my barn a few years ago. Would love to see a picture.

This eye color is pretty consistent with that of my registered Palomino paint (stocky, QH type) horse who has enough Appaloosa characteristics (hoof stripping, visible eye sclera, mottled skin under tail/on muzzle, to qualify as an App though he is not an App.

Forgot to add that this horse has never had ANY problems with his eyes and is now nearly 23 years old.

I had a King Ranch bred QH with "golden" eyes. He was a sooty palomino.

The reason I posted the "champagne eye" link was because they often have hazel or light eyes. All of the horses you all have mentioned here with those eyes have been of coat colors that could be champagnes. One of the other characteristics they list, Vicki, is the speckled skin (like on your paint). Here's the link to the main page, if anyone is interested: https://www.ichregistry.com/

Hi Guys. We've had 13 days of rain over the last 15 days, and I really need the sun to get a good picture. Definite difference between his eyes and the others'. Hazel is probably the best description. The horse is a deep chestnut, and his mane is a little darker than his body. No Ap characteristics at all. QH body for sure, possible with something else mixed in, but tough to say what. Maybe I will take a full body photo of him as well as his eyes...again, when the sun comes out.

Okay, here is a photo of Hugo's eye. Note the different colors (even almost white) that combine to make hazel. Our other horses' are nearly uniform brown and darker, too.

Here's a photo of Hugo. Hard to miss the QH breeding, but he came with no papers so who knows what else might be mixed in.

Concerning the concentric striations and variations in color I see many healthy horse eyes that look like this Heidi. DrO

I've seen eyes that color many times. I do not think that the color variations in the iris are abnormal. Maybe you are accustomed to horse breeds in which dilute genes are not too common?

Hmm...guess I live under a rock, equestrian-wise anyway. I remembering seeing this color only once before. Must be what Susie says. Thanks for all the input.
