We're trying out a gelding with two growths on his ear. I do plan to have him vet checked before we commit. However, I'd like your input based on the attached photo. The growth on the edge of his ear bleeds and dries up and bleeds again. The one inside his ear is slightly smaller but has shown no bleeding. Then again, it's more protected.

Looks like the nodular form of sarcoids (fair to good confidence level) but examination and possibly biopsy would be needed to confirm this. For more on sarcoids and other rule outs for this form of sarcoid see Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Sarcoid. DrO

I was concerned they were sarcoids after reading your article. I still plan to take the horse to the vet for an exam. Maybe I can work out a price break with the owner if they are indeed sarcoids and removing them runs high. Thanks for letting me know in advance what I might be in for.

For what its worth, I had two similar growths removed from my gelding's ears (one in each). 1 1/2 years ago (they were surgically removed on the farm), and have had no reoccurrence.

That's good to know, Marie Anne. Did you vet freeze them off? That's what my vet recommended over the phone if they indeed turn out to be sarcoids. He said total removal including farm fee is about $300.

No, the vet cut both off. My cost was about the same as what your vet has quoted.
