I have a five year old thoroughbred who is on regumate and progesterone shots. We took her off of the progesterone shots about a month ago but kept her on regumate. She abosorbed a pregnancy in April. We checked her hormone level and it was a 10.3 the first two weeks after we took her off of it however, last friday it DrOpped to a 4.4. I am thinking of keeping her on the progesterone shots in additiont to the regumate to avoid an abortion. Is this practice advised??

Welcome Sharon, I see no indication for starting up progesterone injections. In short, there is no well established condition where low progesterone levels induce embryonic loss or abortion. It is normal for these hormones to rise and fall during pregnancy. Generally when these hormones fall before an impending abortion it is in response to some disease that causes the abortion and not the cause of the abortion. Exactly how many days pregnant is your mare and exactly which of the progestanes were tested for? Also what are the units in the above numbers and the lab normals for this stage of pregnancy? DrO
