Information published on Nov 13, 2009 from Dr John Clifford, Deputy Administrator, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, United States of America: Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection Unknown or inconclusive. As of 11 November 2009, the summary of the event is as follows: • The NVSL has confirmed equine piroplasmosis (Theileria equi) in 317 horses. Two hundred eighty-eight T. equi positive horses are located on the index ranch in Texas, seven are on other premises in Texas, one is in Alabama, two are in California, five are in Florida, one is in Georgia, five are in Louisiana, one is in Minnesota, two are in North Carolina, three are in New Jersey, one is in Tennessee, and one is in Wisconsin. • All known T. equi positive horses are currently under quarantine. • Additional tick testing/speciation results are pending and the tick investigation on the premises is continuing. • Testing of all epidemiologically linked horses is ongoing. As stated above the next two steps is to determine the extent of infection within the tick communities surrounding these outbreaks and track down possible exposed horses and test. With the onset of cold weather there may be a delay till next summer before we know fully the extent of the problem and how well contained this problem is. DrO
