My mare had shoes pulled about 3 weeks ago and threw an abscess in her hind right. It has been three weeks now, the vet has been and gone saying the abscess had burst, but my mare is still swollen, lame, and has heat around the joint. The only time this is not apparent is if we have her on bute, and once taken off in about 3 days she comes up like this again. My question is, is this normal abscess recovery or is it possible something else is going on?

Welcome Nikita, Sometimes when solar abscesses rupture out at the coronet they do not drain well which may be what is going on with your horse. It may go and resolve but your best course is to have the veterinarian out and locate the abscess under the sole and drain it out there, assuming this is what is happening. DrO

Thanks for your response! The abscess ruptured at sole, not the coronet band. We have checked the abscess everyday and it appears to have drained. Any other ideas?

Nikita, I have a TB who has had an abscess in the sole. My farrier came weekly to check his progress and pronounced the hole grown out. 5 days later he blew at the band and was swollen. My farrier sent me off to the vet for xrays and he had the beginnings of a bone infection. Don't jump to worst case but I second Dr. O. Get your vet, preferably a foot vet. I happen to live in an area of specialist and at first I thought it was funny but it turns out to be beneficial.

Nikita, if the initial vet assessment was correct poor drainage of the abscess is very likely. Abscesses do not "blow out" of the horn of the sole or wall as the abscess does not break down the horn. There may be some small amount of drainage from the initial defect but these almost always have to pared open larger to drain adequately. For more on this and proper care of a draining abscess be sure to review the article on Abscesses associated with this discussion. If this is not associated with the abscess any cause of lameness is possible and will require localization for diagnosis, for more on this see Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse.
