Hi Dr. O. My girlfriends horse developed a very light band in the iris of her right eye about 2 years ago. It was a horizontal band 1/2 way between the pupil and the lower edge of the iris. (at the 5 o'clock position if the eye were a clock) Just wondering if you have any information about changes in the iris and the possible correlation to changes in the body. Thanks!

Changes in the color of the iris is pretty common in horses without problems but can indicate pathological changes. I do not know of any relation between color changes of the iris and problems in other body systems. DrO

Do you mean they can indicate pathological changes in the eye or sometimes they can indicate other pathological changes in the body?

Pathological changes in the iris jones. It seems self evident that if the iris pathology reflected also reflects a systemic pathology it could be reflective of a systemic disease. But I cannot think of any examples. The deep pigmentation covers any other abnormal coloring like changes in vascular status. Maybe one exception would be albinism, not really a disease though. DrO

I know there is the study of iridology and reflexology in humans that map internal systems to the eye and foot,so I thought there might be a simmilar study/theory for horses. The horse I am thinking of had the color change for 2 years and was just put down with undiagnosed colic. The vet has not given cause of death yet and I was wondering if there is an "eye map" for horses to see if her spot coordinated with an area of her bowel etc. There is some information on the internet of the map of the eye of humans I cant imagine it correlates with horses.

jones, while there may be such studies there is no good science behind such claims that I am aware of and it strikes be as unlikely with our current understanding of physiology. DrO

Yeah, I know iridology can be a little out there, but ya never know when the eyes really are the window to the soul...or the guts The vet called today and said he did not find a blockage but there was an 8 inch growth/tumor on the outside of her colon. No blockage of the actual lumen of the colon. The horse was very painful the first day and did not respond to banamine. Had to be sedated to be kept from rolling/thrashing and then after 2 days was less painful but then started a slight temp...liver started to go after 4 to 5 days of not eating. She was put down after 10 days. It was horrible. She was never sick a day before.
