We almost lost Dusty the old guy last year from impaction colic, not drinking enough when it is cold. Any tips on what to add to his diet/etc. to avoid problems this winter.
I noticed less water missing in his bucket the last few -13 degree nites. He has a heated bucket, and they have a communal heated bucket of water as well.
I feed him soaked down senior gruel, and I add some table salt. I added some vegetable oil tonights as well. Any other tips?
thanks

How warm is the water in his bucket? I've noticed a lot of horses don't like warm water, but prefer cool. On really cold nights I give my horses a "tea" I make from either soaked alfalfa pellets stirred into the water, or a little senior or sweet feed..anything they really like the taste of. They usually slurp it all down and get water that way. When traveling or at shows if I'm concerned about a horse not drinking enough, I add 7-up, gatoraid, kool-aid etc. to the water and give them small amounts at a time. I've heard of people putting in apple cider vinegar or different juices also.

Susan I did the same as Sara when we had our blizzard and cold weather. alfalfa pellets, their ration balancer, soaked in a couple gallons of tepid water(for a couple hrs.s) with a half of carrot and half an apple (twice a day) They slurrped it all right down, and got about 5 gals water in the process for the day.
