My 2 year old filly just started making a popping noise when she walks. Upon investigation, it appears as though her right rear pastern pops into place when she rolls her foot in forward walking motion. It does appear slightly swollen. I do not feel heat when I touch the area. She does not appear lame and appears to put weight on the leg. I do not see or hear the pop when she trots or lopes. I have an appointment with my vet on Monday, but I was wondering if you have any thoughts on this situation.

Thanks.

Welcome Heidi,
Popping noises originating from joints is a common event in normal horses and we often hear of transient popping noises in growing horses. There have been two commonly stated reasons for the popping noise.
1) Joint fluid transiting small holes under a lot of pressure.
2) Snapping of tendons or ligaments into place.

However this is not to suggest that it cannot be associated with some pathology and the increased swelling in the joints suggests this may be the case.
