A friend of mine has an older horse which had a serious accident this summer. Most of the wounds healed properly and are now not able to be observed.

A wound on the front pastern was sutured and later developed a lump above the sutures, which were later removed. The vet advised that the lump was inconsequential, but no ultrasound or intrusive exam was performed.

The area below the lump recently reopened, perhaps due to damage - no one witnessed the incident. The wound bled cleanly and there were no signs of pus.

The vet advised gauze and a standing wrap, changed daily, which my friend did follow. Several days later, the wound is clean, with yellowish / whitish tissue closing the gap over a deeper reddish core, but the lump remains and if pressed on the hair, the wound area beneath the lump seeps clear fluid.

The horse does not seem to show lameness. but he has not been formally tested.

Any recommendations?

Hello Mark,
You are welcome to print off our articles on wound care for your friend but we avoid third hand consults on the board. Besides the time factor we have found obtaining good information in such cases very difficult.
