I AI for a small farm with a hand full of mares who have trouble settling. This year we have decided to try the oxytocin/uterine lavage treatment on these mares. I understand that oxytocin should be given 6 hours post breeding. My first question is, is this a firm time frame or could the oxytocin be given later than 6 hours? For instance, we usually breed at about 6-8PM, so could we give the shot the following morning? Also, I need to be reminded of how long the fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube before reaching the uterus. We ultrasound and breed our mares on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If a mare ovulates on a Friday night or Saturday is it still safe to lavage the uterus if ovulation is not detected until Monday? Further, one of our stallions has very low fertility. We do not plan to breed mares with known fertility problems to this stallion. Would you recommend that we use the oxytocin/lavage treatment with any mare bred to this stallion as there are a large amount of dead cells in his ejaculate? Thank you

Welcome Stephanie, If oxytocin is given the next day after breeding you will see increased clearance of uterine fluid and you will continue to see this benefit for up to 2 or 3 days post ovulation. That is not to say that waiting is as good as prompt attention to the problem, since the longer the fluid is in there the greater the inflammation. After the 3rd day post ovulation the problem becomes a cervix so tight that fluid is not easily cleared. Since you are monitoring all the mares so closely I believe I would base the treatment on the ultrasonographic appearance of abnormal fluid accumulation in the uterus of the recipient mares. There is some work to suggest that the indiscriminate use of post breeding oxytocin may increase pregnancy rates but until the work is better supported I reserve it for problems breeding. DrO
